It’s About Time!
Time is back! As of May 1st, the grandfather clock at RSE is chiming again!
The Elliot Grandfather Clock on the stairs at RSE has been there keeping time (and watch, no pun intended) for 100 years! The years during the Covid shutdown had a significant impact on the grandfather: the internals got out of sorts from lack of use! The second hand had been lost along with the cabinet keys so rewinding was difficult.
So off to the shop it went for a complete rebuild and a tuneup. The clock mechanism with a new second hand has been returned to 1501 Sage Ave this week to continue reminding us of the time for class as well as when time seems to stand still! By the way, the current students think the chiming is very cool!
Joseph P. Mangione Locksmiths of Troy (a long time RSE vendor) had come earlier to replace the cabinet door locks. Peter Lewin, who had fully rebuilt the clock’s mechanism, showed up at 8 AM to reinstall the mechanism. He described an Elliot grandfather clock as the “Rolls Royce” of grandfather clocks.
The clock was donated by Edith L. Just at the opening of the House in 1924 in memory of her husband, George L. Just ’81.
Elliot Grandfather Clocks were manufactured in England.
This video was filmed by Gray Chen ’28.
